EA Shuts Down BioWare, Cancels Mass Effect: Leaked Trailer and #SaveMassEffect Timeline (Oct 2026)

Timeline of EA closing BioWare and cancelling the next Mass Effect on 21 Oct 2026: ~400 layoffs, the leaked Mass Effect: Universe trailer, and the #SaveMassEffect petition passing 200,000.

TL;DR: On 21 October 2026, Electronic Arts told staff it was closing BioWare, the 31-year-old studio behind Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Knights of the Old Republic, and ending early development of the next Mass Effect. Bloomberg reported about 400 job cuts across EA (roughly 3% of staff), including about 50 at BioWare. A day later, an internal trailer for the cancelled game, Mass Effect: Universe, leaked and was confirmed as authentic. A #SaveMassEffect petition went from about 17,500 signatures to more than 207,000 in five days, and both Commander Shepard actors backed it. EA has not changed course.

What EA actually announced

The news came in a memo to EA employees on Wednesday, 21 October. It was signed by Cam Weber, president and chief studios officer, and David Tinson, president and COO. EA later published the memo on its website. It was the first major restructuring since the buyout closed.

The key passage on BioWare:

"As we focus on these larger opportunities, we've had a small team at BioWare working on early-development for Mass Effect. We've made the decision not to move forward with this development, which means we're closing the studio and our Edmonton workspace. BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly."

The memo itself gives no layoff total. The ~400 jobs (about 3% of EA's workforce) and ~50 at BioWare both come from Bloomberg, citing a person familiar with the plans, and were then repeated by Reuters, AP, The Verge and Polygon. Treat them as well-sourced reports, not EA's official count.

Other changes in the same memo, as reported by Reuters, Variety, Polygon and the BBC:

  • EA will make "fewer simultaneous, large-scale projects in the action-adventure space". Marvel's Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game continue.
  • Respawn and DICE will work together on a new shooter, which Variety and Polygon read as a Star Wars Battlefront game.
  • EA calls Battlefield 6 "a great success" and says it will "invest heavily" in Apex Legends.
  • The Sims project codenamed Project Lotus is paused, and work moves to Project Evergreen.
  • Skate developer Full Circle is cut down to "a smaller, more focused studio".
  • EA says it will help affected staff look for other jobs inside EA.

BioWare posted its own farewell: "For more than 30 years, BioWare has been more than a studio... Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending."

EA's side of the argument

EA's case rests on three points, all taken from the memo and its context:

  1. Market pressure. The memo says "players have more choices than ever" and competition is "intensifying". EA says it will put money into a few priorities: sports, shooters and a small number of big action-adventure games.
  2. The project was small and early. EA describes a "small team" in "early development", not a game close to launch.
  3. BioWare's recent results. Anthem (2019) disappointed. Veilguard reached about 1.5 million players in its first quarter, which EA said was nearly 50% below its target. The BBC notes that BioWare's last two releases both missed sales expectations. By early 2025, the studio was already under 100 people.

There is also the debt. The buyout left EA with large debt, about $18 billion according to Polygon and $20 billion according to the BBC. Polygon also reports a plan to cut annual costs by $700 million, with about $170 million of that from "organizational efficiencies". A small team on a long, expensive RPG with no release date is an easy target under that plan.

As of 26 October, EA has made no public statement about the petition, the leaked trailer, or licensing the Mass Effect IP.

The leaked trailer and the technical director

Ars Technica describes the leak as a roughly two-minute "in-engine" montage that calls itself footage "from our small team" using "pre-production assets". It shows an ex-military protagonist in an N7 trenchcoat, an asari at a bar (fans and Game Rant read her as an older Liara), a squad gunfight using mass effect fields, and short shots of other planets and a huge alien in a tank. IGN and Bloomberg's Jason Schreier both confirmed the video was real.

That raised an awkward question. Game Rant points out that EA confirmed the game in December 2020 and was still calling it "early development" six years later. A polished in-engine trailer does not prove the game was far along, but it made the "small team" description harder for fans to accept.

On Saturday, 24 October, Romain Toutain, Mass Effect franchise technical director (Polygon says he held the role from 2022), watched the trailer live on Twitch, speaking French. A fan posted a subtitled clip on Bluesky, and Kotaku, Polygon and PC Gamer reported on it. According to that translation:

  • Choices from the original trilogy would carry over. Players could "plug your saves together" to create alternate timelines, which is where the "Universe" name came from.
  • A "stateful" logic system would re-route or fail missions depending on the player's choices.
  • The protagonist would be customisable. Melee combat was a real mechanic, and the lore would explain how the Mass Relays were repaired after Mass Effect 3.
  • The trailer was an internal mood piece, which is why it uses "Quartz" by French 79 instead of BioWare music.

Sci-fi authors Catherynne M. Valente and Derek Kunsken also said they had worked on the game for years.

The petition and the Shepards

The Change.org petition was started by a user named Joe Smith on 21 October. It does not ask EA to reopen BioWare. It gives EA two options: fund Mass Effect "with proper funding, adequate staffing, and time allocation", or license the IP "to another studio that shares the passion and vision".

Its growth, based on outlet snapshots: about 17,500 (Ars, 22 Oct), 50,000+ (TheGamer, 23 Oct morning), 121,000 (Game Rant, 24 Oct), 180,000+ (PC Gamer, 25 Oct), and more than 207,000 (Dexerto, 26 Oct). Game Rant says more than 29,000 people signed on 22 October alone.

Jennifer Hale (female Shepard) posted a video on 24 October. In it, she imagines fans starting a Kickstarter, investors and "a really cool game company" joining, and "a collective" bringing Mass Effect back. Mark Meer (male Shepard) answered the same day: "Save Mass Effect. Hold the line. I should go, and you should go… sign that petition." Earlier in the week, the two had held an Instagram livestream. The BBC quotes Hale: "BioWare lives on. Mass Effect lives on. We live on."

Backlash across the industry

  • CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski said BioWare was "a massive part" of the studio's history: "Not a great day in the games industry."
  • Owlcat Games pinned a call to sign on its The Expanse: Osiris Reborn account. Destiny community accounts also pushed the petition.
  • Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah said in a video that EA could sell the IP to pay down debt, or "bury them in the vault" (TheGamer).
  • PC Gamer notes that Canadian NDP leader Avi Lewis suggested public funding for BioWare.
  • Fans are planning a billboard near EA's California headquarters, and some have discussed a boycott.
  • Critics of the backlash say a petition cannot force a business decision, and that EA owns the IP outright. PC Gamer and Pixel Twelve both point out that the signatures are not binding. Comment sections on Game Rant and TheGamer also include fans who say BioWare's recent games had already lost them.

The Mass Effect TV series at Prime Video is still in development, according to IGN's sources cited by Ars Technica.

Caution: A claim that BioWare developers tried to buy the studio and the IP before it closed comes from one unverified social media post (via Windows Central). Treat it as rumour.

What this means

BioWare wasn't shut down overnight. It shrank over years: Andromeda, then Anthem, then Veilguard missing its target, then a downsizing to fewer than 100 staff. EA's memo just finished the job. But the way it ended still matters. The game had been teased for six years and was reassured as recently as N7 Day 2025. Then it was cancelled, and an internal trailer leaked a day later showing something far more developed than "early development" suggests. That gap is why the anger is so strong.

Whether 200,000 signatures change anything depends on whether EA, or a buyer, thinks Mass Effect is worth more as a licence than locked away. N7 Day falls on 7 November, the next obvious point for fans to keep up the pressure.

FAQ

Is BioWare really closed? Yes. EA's 21 October memo says it is "closing the studio and our Edmonton workspace", and BioWare confirmed this on its own channels.

How many people lost their jobs? Bloomberg reports about 400 across EA (about 3%), including about 50 at BioWare. EA's memo does not give a number.

Was the leaked Mass Effect: Universe trailer real? Yes. IGN and Bloomberg's Jason Schreier confirmed it. Technical director Romain Toutain said it was an internal mood piece.

What does the #SaveMassEffect petition ask for? It asks EA to either fund continued development properly or license Mass Effect to another studio. It does not ask EA to reopen BioWare. It passed 200,000 signatures on 26 October.

Did both Shepard actors support it? Yes. Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer both posted #SaveMassEffect videos on 24 October, and Meer told fans to "sign that petition".

Has EA responded to the petition? Not as of 26 October.

Is the Mass Effect TV show cancelled too? No. IGN's Prime Video sources say it is still in development.

Why did EA do it? EA says it wants to focus on fewer, bigger bets in a tougher market. Critics point to the $55 billion buyout, the debt that came with it, and EA's cost-cutting targets.
