Why Is T1's Doran So Polarizing? Stats, Zeus Comparison, Protests and What FMKorea Fans Say (Worlds 2026)
Doran won Worlds 2025 with T1 yet splits fans like few players. A dated timeline, Doran vs Zeus stats, GD@15, MSI 2026 protests, the agency's legal action, and FMKorea reactions after the 2-0 over MKOI.
TL;DR: Choi "Doran" Hyeon-joon joined T1 for 2025 after Zeus left for Hanwha Life Esports. He won Worlds 2025 in his first year, signed on again for 2026, and still splits the fanbase like few active players do. Critics point to a lower ceiling than Zeus, a negative early-game gold gap in LCK 2026 and ugly international series like MSI 2026 vs G2, where protest trucks followed. Defenders point to the trophy, a weakside job that hides stats, and his current Worlds run. On 29 Oct 2026 (KST), T1 beat Movistar KOI 2-0 to reach the Worlds quarterfinals. Doran went 10/0/13 across the series and was named game MVP twice. The case for and against him rests on the same facts, which is exactly why the argument never ends.
Who Doran is, in one paragraph
Doran was born on 22 July 2000. He came up through the amateur KeG Seoul team in 2018 alongside future T1 teammate Gumayusi, and he has since played for six LCK organizations: Griffin, DRX (then DragonX), KT Rolster, Gen.G, Hanwha Life Esports and T1. He won four LCK titles before joining T1: Summer 2022, Spring 2023 and Summer 2023 with Gen.G, and Summer 2024 with HLE. But he went out in the Worlds quarterfinals or semifinals every year until 2025 (Liquipedia). That "domestic winner, international question mark" label followed him to T1.

Source: Liquipedia statistics for Doran and Zeus, read 29 Oct 2026 (KST). "LCK 2026" combines the regular season and playoffs as Liquipedia groups them. Worlds 2026 is left out because both players are mid-tournament. Through five games, Doran's Worlds 2026 line from the game logs is 18/6/29, a KDA of about 7.8.
Laning. For LCK 2026, Outdrafted ranks Doran 7th of 10 LCK top laners in gold difference at 15 minutes (−102). Zeus is 3rd (+112) and Kiin is 1st (+238). Doran ranks higher in CS per minute (3rd, 8.7) and KDA (4th, 2.8) (Outdrafted). Rift Logic estimates the same raw −102 GD@15 shrinks to about −22 once you adjust for champion matchups, which supports the argument that much of his gold deficit comes from counterpicked, weakside drafts (Rift Logic). Rift Logic also credits him with +6.7 wins above replacement for the 2026 season, along with a positive per-game impact (+1.9 percentage points of win probability).
Champion pool. Across all 2026 games, Outdrafted lists Jayce (23 games, 78% win rate), Ambessa (20) and Gnar (15) as his most-played champions (Outdrafted). In tier-1 league games, Rift Logic also shows Rumble, Sion (7-1) and K'Sante (5-2). He has carried on Jayce and Ambessa this year. His tank and utility games on Sion and K'Sante win often but rarely make highlight reels.
Why he's polarizing: the five fault lines
1. He replaced Zeus, and the Zeus departure was itself a fight
Zeus left after back-to-back Worlds titles. His agency, The Play, said Zeus wanted to stay but that T1's offers were unacceptable. The agency's published timeline says the two sides could not agree on contract length before a 3:30 pm deadline on 19 Nov 2024. HLE had first set the deadline for 3:00 pm. T1 had given a different account in an AMA, and the agency disputed parts of it (4Gamers timeline, Dexerto). Doran arrived the same day, so part of the fanbase saw him as the result of a negotiation they were angry about. Every bad game since then gets read against an imagined "what if Zeus stayed".
2. A ring without a Finals MVP
Defenders have a simple argument: T1 won Worlds 2025 with Doran, completing the first three-peat in the game's history. Critics answer that Gumayusi was Finals MVP, and that Sheep Esports gave Doran a 6.5, calling him "the weakest link for T1 today, though he still got the job done". The same review called his game 1 Ambessa "flawless" (Sheep Esports). Both sides can quote the same final.
3. High-variance international series
His bad games tend to be very bad and very public. In the MSI 2026 G2 series, Broken Blade solo-killed him in game 1, he went 0/6/0 on Yorick in game 2, and in game 4 he solo-killed Broken Blade twice before losing the late fights (MHN). His MSI 2026 KDA of 2.29 is his lowest at any LCK, MSI or Worlds event since joining T1, per Liquipedia. For critics, that series is the evidence. For defenders, it was one series.
4. Weakside top vs carry top
This is the core analytical disagreement. In 2025, Hotspawn wrote that Doran "was never expected to be Zeus 2.0", yet T1's early drafts asked him to carry on Gwen, Rumble and Ambessa. In its view he was "fine against lower teams" but rarely beat the top ones, and his flexibility was "much lower" than Zeus's. It ranked him behind Kiin, Zeus and Siwoo in laning (Hotspawn). A widely upvoted r/SKTT1 post from 31 Oct 2025 argued the opposite. In that view, he is counterpicked, gets no resources and is told to "survive and teamfight", and Caedrel had made a similar point. After MSI 2026, a July 2026 r/SKTT1 thread pushed back on "revisionism" that wrote off his Worlds 2025 contribution. The matchup-adjusted GD@15 above suggests both sides are partly right.
5. Fan-war dynamics, protests and the legal line
T1's fanbase has a history of protest trucks. Gumayusi faced them in 2025, and Doran and Oner faced them in July 2026. Each campaign becomes a second argument about whether trucks count as feedback or harassment. When Supergent announced criminal complaints in August 2026, some fans read it as silencing critics. Doran said publicly that "criticism of performance is something a pro should naturally take" and that fans giving normal criticism "don't need to worry at all" (OSEN).
What Korean fans on FMKorea are saying
We reviewed about 60 posts on FMKorea's LoL board that mention Doran, all written on 29 Oct 2026 (KST), after the MKOI series. (Posts were collected 07:09–10:46 KST via a site search for "도란". This was a Swiss-stage round-4 match, not a quarterfinal.) We do not name any posters. Titles are paraphrased in English.
Approximate manual tally of about 60 FMKorea LoL board post titles collected 29 Oct 2026 (KST). This is a rough signal, not a poll.
Praise, by far the largest group. Roughly 25 to 30 titles praised the no-death carry and clutch teamfights, especially the game 1 Ambessa ult on Supa's Kai'Sa at the dragon-soul fight. About six said his laning and ult timing had improved, and about six credited better sync with Faker and the team. A smaller group, about three posts, made a personal point: he is "a genuinely nice person" and fans had been waiting for him to prove himself. One post cited a single-game rating higher than the one we found published. FORFEIT's published scores are 9.3 and 9.6 (MVP) for the two games (FORFEIT).
Criticism. Even on his best day, three critical threads kept appearing:
- About four posts named sudden over-aggression and careless deaths, especially around lane swaps, as his main flaw. Several of these were written by fans who otherwise praised the game.
- About four argued that the performance was overhyped because MKOI was a weaker opponent. MKOI entered the series 2-1, the same record as T1.
- About three called for him to be replaced in the offseason, and argued over whether the 2026 re-sign had been the right call.
The meta fan-war. About eight threads were arguments about the argument. One side accused long-time critics of bad faith: they "bashed him for months" and now act as if they never did. The other side said a player in T1's top-lane seat should simply be held to a higher standard.
Engagement signals. These are view and recommend counts at collection time, so treat them as rough signals:
- "Did Doran play well today?": about 4,088 views.
- "Why I root for Doran": about 3,503 views.
- "He played really well, but…": about 3,046 views and a net −26 recommends. Readers pushed back against nitpicking on the day.
- "Who do T1 fans want to replace Doran with?": about 2,060 views and net −4.
- "I think Doran's laning has been pretty good this Worlds": about 1,259 views.
Reading the data. The board reflects the larger pattern. Months of frustration with a high-variance player met one breakout Worlds series, and the same game set off both reactions: "finally" and "weak opponent". The fan-war over who was right all along then amplified both.
What critics argue vs what defenders argue
| Critics | Defenders |
|---|---|
| Lower carry ceiling than Zeus. LCK 2026 KDA of 2.69 vs Zeus's 3.32 | Worlds 2025 champion in his first T1 season. Higher KDA than Zeus at Worlds 2025 (3.43 vs 3.06) |
| −102 GD@15 in LCK 2026, 7th of 10 top laners | Adjusted for matchups, the deficit is about −22. He is often drafted weakside |
| Collapses in international series, like MSI 2026 vs G2 | Big swing games when it matters: Worlds 2025 G1 Ambessa, 10/0/13 vs MKOI at Worlds 2026 |
| Careless aggression and avoidable deaths | Owns his mistakes publicly and handles criticism maturely |
| T1 should upgrade in the offseason | Who is realistically available? Zeus has had down events at HLE too (LCK Cup 2026: KDA 2.19, 35.7% wins) |
Outlook
T1 is in the Worlds 2026 quarterfinals and is chasing an unprecedented fourth straight title. The tournament runs to 14 Nov (FORFEIT). The polarization will probably settle there. If T1 goes deep and Doran keeps winning fights on Ambessa, Gwen or Jayce, the "Doran tax" meme loses its force. If the best-of-five bracket exposes his laning against Kiin- or Zeus-level opponents, the July arguments return. Either way, his contract after 2026 will be the offseason's first T1 storyline.
Caution: community tallies here are approximate and reflect one board on one day. They are not a poll.
