EMEA Masters Patch Switch: How Riot Moved Playoffs to 26.20 With 18 Hours' Notice Before Worlds 2026 — Timeline

EMEA Masters teams learned at 23:50 on 8 Oct that playoffs were moving from patch 26.18 to 26.20. The reported cause, G2 NORD's account, the Riot response status and past Worlds patch controversies.

TL;DR: Late on 8 Oct 2026, EMEA Masters teams found out that their playoff matches would move from Patch 26.18 to 26.20. That's the Worlds patch, with buffs to Aphelios and Draven among other changes. G2 NORD head coach Nicolas Perez says teams were told at 23:50. That left teams playing on 9 Oct roughly 18 hours to adapt. Sheep Esports traces the switch to a tournament-realm scheduling error: 26.18 was removed from Riot's pro-server rotation ahead of Worlds. Perez said the Demacia Cup was also affected. We found no public Riot statement explaining the switch as of 14 Oct (KST). Worlds 2026 starts 15 Oct (Los Angeles time) on 26.20.

What happened, according to whom

  • The notice. Perez says teams learned of the change at 23:50 on 8 Oct. Teams playing on 9 Oct had about 18 hours, and G2 NORD about 36. According to Perez, G2 NORD would get "only one scrim to practice on this patch," and some other teams would get none (Sheep Esports).
  • The cause (reported, not confirmed by Riot). Sheep Esports says Riot runs a limited number of pro-play servers, each carrying patches in pairs. Pulling 26.18 from rotation before Worlds left the last competitions still on 26.18 with nowhere to play it. Sheep's sources also say Riot skipped 26.19 altogether, so teams went straight from 26.18 to 26.20. M4 Games quotes Perez blaming the switch on Riot and EMEA having "botched their patch organization."
  • Why it matters for drafts. Perez pointed to the Aphelios and Draven buffs in 26.20 because G2 NORD were about to face a player known for both champions (Sheep Esports). Riot's own notes say 26.20 also adjusts pro staples like Ambessa and K'Sante and buffs Kennen and Kindred.
  • Demacia Cup. Perez said the Demacia Cup "also suffers" (as quoted by M4 Games). Sheep Esports says it was "potentially" affected. We couldn't independently confirm the details.
  • Riot's side. We searched for a Riot or EMEA Masters statement and found none. A League news roundup also reported that no public Riot explanation was available. Until Riot comments, the cause above is Sheep Esports' reporting.

Perez's comment, as quoted by Sheep Esports: "This kind of bullshit happening in the most important competition of our year... I have no words."

The Worlds connection

Riot's 26.20 notes call it the Worlds patch. The LoL Esports Worlds 2026 primer lists the Play-In Stage on 15–18 Oct, the Swiss Stage on 23–31 Oct and the Knockout Stage on 3–14 Nov, with the final on 14 Nov in Brooklyn. In practice, the EMEA Masters teams got a forced, rushed preview of the meta Worlds teams have been preparing for since 26.20 came out on 7 Oct.

Patch-timing complaints aren't new (short, verified history)

  • Worlds 2017, the Ardent Censer meta. Polygon explained at the time that the Worlds patch made Ardent Censer supports close to mandatory. Fans counted 24 Ardent supports in the first 12 games (r/leagueoflegends tally). Riot cut the item's attack-speed and on-hit bonuses in Patch 7.21, after the event (Polygon).
  • Worlds 2022, Patch 12.18. Riot's Worlds patch notes had to clarify after publication that "the Nasus buffs were pulled from Patch 12.18. Apologies for any confusion." A small example of last-minute changes to the competitive build (Riot patch notes).
  • Worlds 2023, Patch 13.19. ESTNN reported that Riot balance lead Matt Leung-Harrison confirmed the Worlds patch would ship on 27 Sep, less than a week before the tournament, which left teams a short adaptation window.

The EMEA Masters case is a different kind of problem. The complaint isn't about balance. It's about operations: a server-scheduling error that changed the patch in the middle of a playoff.

What to watch

  • Any Riot or EMEA Masters statement or apology, and whether Riot changes how it handles tournament-realm patch rotation.
  • Demacia Cup organizers' account of how they were affected.
  • Whether Aphelios and Draven turn up as priority picks in the Worlds Play-Ins.
