Worlds 2026 Swiss Stage Controversy: KC vs CFO Pauses, the Strategy-Talk Ruling and HLE's Exit
Timeline of the KC vs CFO Game 2 pauses at Worlds 2026, the item-purchase bug, the rule 5.1.6 ruling that let teams talk strategy, HLE's Swiss exit and the quarterfinals ahead.
TL;DR: Karmine Corp beat CTBC Flying Oyster 2-0 in Swiss Round 4 of Worlds 2026 (29 Oct US Central time, early 30 Oct KST) and knocked CFO out at 1-3. But Game 2 is the one people are arguing about. CFO were ahead when play stopped around the 25-minute mark over an equipment issue. Reports describe Doggo being unable to buy items, several separate technical pauses, and one stoppage of nearly 30 minutes. During the long stop, a referee let the players talk strategy, which is legal under rule 5.1.6 of Riot's 2026 international ruleset. KC came back and won in 36:54. Two days later, MSI champion Hanwha Life Esports lost 0-2 to BLG and went out at 2-3. The quarterfinals start 3 Nov in Allen, Texas (4 Nov 07:00 KST), and KC face T1. As of publication, Riot has not given a public explanation for the pauses.

Source: FORFEIT. The x-axis is in-game time, so time spent paused isn't shown. The 25-minute marker is approximate and follows Strafe, esportnow and Hupu. We didn't chart pause lengths because only the "nearly 30 minutes" figure has a source.
The data supports two claims that both get made online. First, CFO were clearly ahead when the trouble started. Second, CFO were still about 3.5K up at minute 29, well after the issue was first reported. The game swung in the last four minutes, around the soul, Baron and Elder fights. Whether that collapse was caused by the pauses is a matter of opinion. The numbers can't settle it.
How many pauses? The sources disagree
- Sheep Esports (live, on X): three separate pauses, with the item bug during the second.
- esportnow and Chinese-language coverage: five pauses in total, including the long one.
- white.market notes that "some updates referred to a fourth pause".
- Chinese reports say restarting the PC fixed the earlier stops. They also say the game paused again shortly after one restart, and that the long stop came after that.
We report the count as "at least three; up to five reported". Riot has not published an official count or cause.
What the rules say
Under the 2026 LoL Esports International Events Competition Ruleset (v1.1), the Worlds event-specific rules apply on top of it:
- 5.1.2 Authorized pauses. Allowed reasons include unintentional disconnection, hardware or software malfunction (for example, a game glitch), and physical interference.
- 5.2.4 Play through bug. Fixes can include restarting the client or the computer, which matches the reported PC restarts.
- 5.1.6 Player communication during a stoppage. This is the key rule:
"For the fairness of all competing teams, players are not allowed to communicate with each other during a game pause. However, players may communicate to the referee when directed in order to identify and remedy the cause for the stoppage. Additionally, if a pause extends or is expected to extend to a length that warrants it, referees may, at their sole discretion, allow players to communicate with each other. Once such permission is granted by a referee, there shall be no restrictions on the subjects of communication, including but not limited to game conditions and strategy."
Bottom line: the referee's call was within the rules. Older international rulesets, such as Worlds 2024, limited permitted talk to "the game conditions". The no-restrictions wording is new: it appeared in the LEC's rulebook 3.1 in June 2026 (esports.observer) and is now in the international rules. Critics are really objecting to the rule itself. A long break where both teams can talk strategy lets the team that is behind regroup. KC's own players said the break didn't hurt them, and CFO's coach says it did.
Responses
Official. As of publication (2 Nov KST), we found no public statement from Riot Games or LoL Esports about the cause of the pauses or the item-purchase bug.
KC. Canna, to Inven Global: "The pause lasted longer than expected. However, Riot gave us permission to discuss the game during that time, so refocusing once play resumed wasn't much of a problem." Caliste, quoted by Strafe from DPM.LOL, was less relaxed about it: "So mentally it was complicated, and above all pretty unusual. [...] the pauses felt like an eternity for us."
CFO. A PTT thread relays head coach Chawy's posts on X. According to it, Doggo's ping spiked while his teammates' was normal, and this happened two or three times. A replacement PC came only after about 30 minutes and then had audio problems. Chawy also said the stoppages cost CFO the game, because players forgot enemy summoner spells and positions and lost focus. This is a secondhand relay that we couldn't check against the original posts, so treat it as unverified.
Community. Replies to LoL Esports collected by Strafe split two ways. One fan wrote that the pauses "completely disrupted the CFOs mindset" and cost them their momentum. Another: "The bug tilt Doggo so bad". A third put it on CFO: "CFO really blew that and KC took advantage!"
Meanwhile: Hanwha Life's Swiss exit

| IG, T1, TES | 3-1 | Quarterfinals |
| BLG, KC, LYON | 3-2 | Quarterfinals |
| HLE, LOS, MKOI | 2-3 | Eliminated |
| CFO, G2, TL | 1-3 | Eliminated |
| AL, TSW | 0-3 | Eliminated |

- The path: a win over TES, losses to Gen.G and IG, a 2-0 win over G2, then 0-2 to BLG in the decider. That was a rematch of the MSI 2026 final, which HLE won 3-2 (PS Esports, GosuGamers).
- The games: HLE lost a long, close Game 1 when Knight's Orianna landed a Shockwave on four players. Game 2 got away early, and by 31 minutes BLG led by 11,000 gold (PS Esports).
- The history: GosuGamers and Sheep Esports call HLE the first MSI champion to miss the Worlds playoffs in the same year. Hotspawn calls it the biggest upset of the Swiss stage. It also ends Gumayusi's run of three straight Worlds titles with T1, in his first year at HLE (Hotspawn, Sheep Esports).
- Zeus, to Sheep Esports: "rather than aiming for coordinated, planned plays, we ended up resorting to individual plays much more often, which caused a repeated bad cycle." (Sheep Esports)
Three LCK teams are left: Gen.G, DK and T1.
What's next
All quarterfinals are best-of-five in Allen, Texas, starting at 4 PM CST (07:00 KST the next day):
| US date | KST | Match |
|---|---|---|
| Tue 3 Nov | Wed 4 Nov 07:00 | TES vs IG |
| Wed 4 Nov | Thu 5 Nov 07:00 | Gen.G vs LYON |
| Thu 5 Nov | Fri 6 Nov 07:00 | DK vs BLG |
| Fri 6 Nov | Sat 7 Nov 07:00 | T1 vs KC |
The semifinals follow on 7–8 Nov (US) in Allen, and the final is 14 Nov in Brooklyn (15 Nov KST) (LoL Esports primer).
What to watch:
- KC are at their first Worlds and came through the Play-In. They already beat T1 2-1 in the EWC 2026 semifinal in July. A quarterfinal win would end the KC–CFO pause debate by itself.
- Riot. Expect pressure for a short explanation of the Game 2 hardware fault before the Bo5s start. Also watch whether referees use the 5.1.6 strategy-talk permission again during a long pause.
- Hardware. If more Allen pauses hit the same kind of station, the Doggo case stops looking like a one-off.
